This weekend Sunday Parkways will take place in southeast Portland. For those of you who don’t know, Sunday Parkways is a series of free events that promote healthy active living. As part of the event, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey will have a booth (#7 – near SE Cesar Chavez Ave). They will offer a free a Build-a-Bike seminar for kids. Children will get their own safety vest and learn how to put a bike together. For the kids that participate, their family will receive a discount code for tickets to the show. In addition, if you show-up to Sunday Parkways in circus gear, you can win a family four-pack of event tickets to Ringling Bros. Presents Built to Amaze! (Moda Center September 17–20). The Sunday Parkways event will take place this Sunday (August 23rd). See map below for route.
It’s Fleet Week and the ships are coming to the Portland Rose Festival this weekend. Some of the tours start as early as 9 am Thursday, but you’ll have to wait until 9:30 am Friday if you want to see the big Navy ships. You’ll want to get there early because the lines are really long. I took the kids last year and we waited in line for about four hours. Most of the ships leave Monday morning, so expect delays. Note: the photos on this page were taken last year.
If you’ve been following me on Twitter, then you know I’ve been busy shopping in a Chevy Equinox loaner for the big Doernbecher raffle. I’ve put together a grill package consisting of a fabulous Traeger Lil Tex Pro Grill and Smoker (sells for $799), $200 in delicious steaks from The Meating Place, a $100 Parr Lumber gift card (for grill accessories and meat rubs), and a great grill recipes book from Powell’s Books. The Chevy Shop Social: Portland fundraiser will take place this Thursday (May 21st) in Pioneer Square on May 21st (starts 6 pm). Raffle tickets are only $2 each (12 tickets for $10, 15 tickets for $20). That means for as little as $2, you can enter to win my grill package that is worth over $1100. Sweet deal, right? As I mentioned before, this is a great cause because raffle proceeds will benefit the Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation.
If you’re looking for ideas or contractors for your home and garden, then be sure to check out the Portland Home & Garden Show. The event is taking right now at the Portland Expo Center. Admission is $10 (free for children under 12). The format this year is similar to last year’s event — meaning no stunning water features. However, I like the designs in the landscape area better than the ones I saw last year. Continue on to see some photos from the garden showcase.
Cirque du Soleil is coming back to Portland. The name of their new show is Varekai. The new show will take place May 6-10 for eight performances. Sadly, Cirque du Soleil will not be setting up their recognizable tents at the Expo Center. This time around, they will be performing at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum. It’s been ages since I’ve been inside Memorial Coliseum. The last time I was there, it was before they built the Rose Garden for our Trail Blazers basketball team. Anyway, tickets are on sale now online or by phone (1-800-745-3000). Ticket prices range from $40 to $105 (subject to change).
My son can’t wait to see the upcoming Seventh Son movie, which will be released February 6th. If you can’t wait to see it too, now’s your chance to attend an early screening of the Seventh Son. Thanks to Universal Pictures, 14 readers of my Portland blog can win VIP passes to a screening of the film at Regal Bridgeport (February 4th, 7pm). Each VIP pass is good for one person plus a guest. To enter my contest, leave a comment about your favorite sci-fi/fantasy movie. The deadline to enter is Monday, February 2nd. Winners will be randomly selected and notified by email (check your spam folder on Tuesday, February 3rd). Note: the name you used to enter is the name I’m submitting to the studio rep if you win.
The Harlem Globetrotters are coming to Portland and Eugene early next year. I’m excited and plan on taking the kids. We’ve never seen the Globetrotters before, but we’ve heard they are amazing and are very entertaining. The Globetrotters will be in Eugene on February 20th and in Portland on February 21st. Tickets are on sale now (holiday gift idea: Globetrotters tickets are wonderful stocking stuffers). For a limited time, you can save $7 off select tickets to any Harlem Globetrotter game. ZooLights is finally open at the Oregon Zoo. From now through January 4th, Portlanders can check out the splendid light show. We went last weekend and had a wonderful time. It was very cold, but we still fun. This year, the train is even back. Because of the new construction at the zoo, the train route is different from previous years. But it’s still a great way to see the lights at the Oregon Zoo. BTW, we also bought some fudge from their store. My family loves their fudge!
