Free activities passes for your kids

Chinese Classical Garden, Portland Children's Museum, and Portland Japanese Garden

It’s spring break in Oregon. If you’re staying in town with the kids, then you should try getting a free activity pass from the library. At the Multnomah County Library, you can check out a three-day pass to the Portland Children’s Museum. Their family pass admits up to three people. If you live on the west side, the Washington County Cooperative Library Services offer cultural passes to seven places:

  • A.C. Gilbert’s Discovery Village (five guests)
  • Lan Su Chinese Garden (two adults and two children)
  • Pittock Mansion (two adults and two children)
  • Portland Children’s Museum (one adult and two children, or two adults and one child)
  • Portland Japanese Garden (two adults and two children)
  • Rice Northwest Museum of Rocks and Minerals (two adults and four children)
  • Washington County Museum (one family)

The Multnomah County Library allows parents to reserve a family pass online. As far as I can tell, you can’t reserve the three-day pass for a particular date. I’m not certain about this, but there appears to be about 650 hold requests (I think they only have 18 passes). The Washington County Library, on the other hand, lets you call to reserve a pass for a particular date. However, the pass is good for one day only and you have to return the pass to the library on the same day you check it out.
