If you’re looking for ideas or contractors for your home and garden, then be sure to check out the Portland Home & Garden Show. The event is taking right now at the Portland Expo Center. Admission is $10 (free for children under 12). The format this year is similar to last year’s event — meaning no stunning water features. However, I like the designs in the landscape area better than the ones I saw last year. Continue on to see some photos from the garden showcase.
Cirque du Soleil is coming back to Portland. The name of their new show is Varekai. The new show will take place May 6-10 for eight performances. Sadly, Cirque du Soleil will not be setting up their recognizable tents at the Expo Center. This time around, they will be performing at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum. It’s been ages since I’ve been inside Memorial Coliseum. The last time I was there, it was before they built the Rose Garden for our Trail Blazers basketball team. Anyway, tickets are on sale now online or by phone (1-800-745-3000). Ticket prices range from $40 to $105 (subject to change).
The Harlem Globetrotters are coming to Portland and Eugene early next year. I’m excited and plan on taking the kids. We’ve never seen the Globetrotters before, but we’ve heard they are amazing and are very entertaining. The Globetrotters will be in Eugene on February 20th and in Portland on February 21st. Tickets are on sale now (holiday gift idea: Globetrotters tickets are wonderful stocking stuffers). For a limited time, you can save $7 off select tickets to any Harlem Globetrotter game. ZooLights is finally open at the Oregon Zoo. From now through January 4th, Portlanders can check out the splendid light show. We went last weekend and had a wonderful time. It was very cold, but we still fun. This year, the train is even back. Because of the new construction at the zoo, the train route is different from previous years. But it’s still a great way to see the lights at the Oregon Zoo. BTW, we also bought some fudge from their store. My family loves their fudge!
The family and I went to the Sunset at the Zoo event last week. For those of you who don’t know, Sunset at the Zoo is a series of events that feature musicians and extra activities. On those days, the Oregon Zoo also stays open an extra couple of hours. The kids and I had a fun time. There was music by the Pete Krebs Trio, Copper and Coal, and Trashcan Joe. And my kids enjoyed the children activities. My kids were also well-behaved for a change. They didn’t even complained when we made them eat cotton candy and ice cream. Anyways, Sunset at the Zoo is a fun event for both kids and parents. Unfornuately, Sunset at the Zoo is over and you’ll have to wait until next summer to attend one.
The circus is coming back to Portland. Thanks to Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, the greatest show on earth will return to the Moda Center (I still prefer to call it the Rose Garden) for four days (September 4 – 7). The all-new show, Super Circus Heroes, features amazing human athletic abilities and animals with unbelievable talent. The show will inspire and thrill children of all ages.
Fourth of July lands on Friday this year. Isn’t that sweet? Now we can stay up for the fireworks and not have to get up early the next morning to go to work. If you’re planning on watching the fireworks shows in the metro area, check out my list: Portland Oregon Fireworks 2014 (includes nearby cities).
It’s Rose Festival Fleet Week. Unlike last year, ships from the US Navy will be in Portland this year. Yay! Schedules will vary by ship, but the general tour hours are from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. Public tours are free, but will be on a first-come basis.
The Rose Festival CityFair opens at 5pm on Friday. The Portland event will be open for three full weekends starting this Memorial Day weekend. Once again, CityFair take place in Governor Tom McCall Waterfront Park downtown. There will be midway rides, live music in the RoZone, local beer and tasty treats, exotic animal displays, a wide variety of shopping, and other special attractions. In addition, there will be fireworks on opening night.
Hey, Portlanders. I thought I would share a mobile app today. It’s called Clip Radio. According to the press material, it’s the first and only mobile app that allows listeners to see and listen to what is on any radio station and interact by finding song information, entering a contest, accessing local deals offered during radio ads and more. The app currently only supports stations in the Portland and San Diego metro areas.
